A Tutor's Touch
We come to your home to do the tutoring, or to a public place like a library
if you prefer. All of my tutors have teaching degrees, and almost half are home
school parents, like myself.
I have a special test that I use called the Brigance. I don't charge any
extra for the testing. The Brigance is much better than standardized tests
because it is administered one on one and the tutor watches the student work to
see where the student is having a problem. For instance, if the student is doing
135 x 42 and sets the problem up properly and does everything right in the
problem, but puts down that 4 x 3 is 16, we know that he knows how to work this
type of multiplication problem, but needs to work on multiplication facts. A
regular test can't tell where exactly the breakdown is for the student. Also,
the skills are in order of developmental ability. When the child is unable to do
one or two problems of related skills, we know to move the student to the next
portion of the test. If he can't do a 4th grade level problem in fractions, he's
not going to be able to do 5th or 6th, etc, so we don't frustrate him by making
him do them.
By doing this test, we find out what basic skills are lacking that keep the
student from progressing the way he should. By strengthening these areas of
need, the student builds a firm foundation upon which to build his future
academics upon.
When the test is completed, we use the results to create a goals sheet of the
specific goals that the student needs work in. The tutor knows from the first
session what skills need to be addressed, and doesn't have to waste time trying
to figure it out.
We tutor all types of students and love them all. One thing I like about
tutoring home schooled students is that I can set up a curriculum for them
according to their needs. Then I can be sure they are getting exactly what they
need while we are building their foundation. It also makes the tutoring go
faster and cost less because they are getting extra practice in what they need
without actually being in a tutoring session.
Again, I and all of my tutors have teaching degrees. Most have chosen to stop
teaching to raise and/or home school their children.
We have tutors all over Knoxville, including Powell, Karns, Farragut, West
Knoxville, Strawberry Plains, downtown, etc. I have hand picked each tutor and
would be willing to hire them for my own children. I choose the best tutor for
each child based on the child's needs and the tutor's gifts, experience and
qualifications.
Our prices are between $32 and $40 per hour session for the first month
depending on the type of payment you choose to do. (The first month I offer a
10% discount on top of the 10% prepayment discount or 5% Paypal payment
discount. After that, the cost is between $36 and $40 per hour session depending
on the type of payment chosen.) I also have a pretty hefty sibling discount on
top of that. Also, consider the amount you will save in gas by having us come to
your home! Plus, you can catch up on housework during the tutoring sessions,
something you can't do if you have to go out for tutoring!

My desire is to help others discover that learning isn't just a chore, but
that it can be an enjoyable thing. If we can make it enjoyable for students to
learn, then it makes it more likely that the students will want to learn, which
will encourage them to continue learning throughout life.
Parenting is a full-time job itself, and I am aware that there are always
going to be certain subjects that each of us does not feel as secure in our
knowledge as we would like and that we lack the time to strengthen, which makes
it harder to teach with confidence. I am here to try to help those parents who
need or want help with certain subjects. My strongest areas are in
History/Social Studies, English Composition and Literature, and some Social
Sciences. I can tutor effectively in lower and middle Mathematics (up through
Geometry and Algebra) and General Science, Biology, and Anatomy. I will freely
admit that beyond the basics of Chemistry and Physics I will probably be
learning right along with your student, but I am willing to try.
At the moment I have many available blocks of time during the day throughout
the week. My rate is $10 an hour, though if there are a group of students on the
same level of learning who would like to have a mini-class on the same subject,
I will discount my rates for a class of up to 8. I am currently living in
northwest Knoxville, but I am available to travel to any location in the
Knox/Blount Counties area. You can reach me at the email address above or via
phone at 604-4263. Thanks for your consideration!
